Here’s a sobering thought for your school lunch shopping: every piece of plastic wrapping will end up in the rubbish bin. Some may be recycled (check out Redcycle if you’re not already familiar with their fabulous recycling efforts!) but most is likely to end up in landfill.
Even more sobering: almost every piece of plastic packaging ever made still exists.
Yikes. That’s a lot of chip bags and cheese-and-biscuit packages hanging out in landfill.
Many schools encourage parents to send their child’s lunch to school totally nude: no plastic wrappings, no single use packaging, no rubbish for the bins at all.
Does your school already encourage this?
We know that some parents find it difficult to imagine how a school lunch might look without single-use-plastics. But it’s not hard. In fact, like with most things, when you have the right tools, it’s amazingly easy!
And there’s a bonus: you’ll find that your child will be eating healthier, fresher foods because… these are the ones that don’t come in any wrappings. 😉
For the Smorgasbord Eater:
If your child is one who brings their sandwich home as a gift every single afternoon, they may enjoy a finger-food style of lunch in these brilliant little bento boxes. Super-simple to clean and perfect for filling with their favourite fruits, veg sticks, some dip, a boiled egg, cheese cubes, crackers… whatever they like one any given day really!
For the No-Time-To-Eat-Gotta-Play Eater:
This is the child who will swear they honestly have no time to eat their lunch as there is simply too much going on at playtime! These clever zip up snack bags can be filled with snacks, fruit or veges to fill their tummy and then be stuffed into a pocket while they play the game of the day.
For the Food Hygienist:
Properly insulated lunch bags are essential in Australia! Our favourites are the Fridge-To-Go and Montii range of bags that keep your child’s lunch at the perfect temperature to avoid food safety issues and are available in super-cute designs.
Water Bottle Essentials:
Another essential for every day: these water bottles from MontiiCo and Ecococoon are hard wearing and can take all the knocks that the school day brings. We love both of these brands as they have removable bumpers and cocoons to keep the bottle in good condition as your child moves through their school years.
For the Fruit & Yoghurt Lover:
A quick dose of fruit puree and yoghurt is a great school snack and these reusable pouches make it super simple for your child to enjoy it every day. Simply fill and seal, then rinse and wash at the end of the day, and you’ll know they are getting only natural goodness and no nasties in their snack.
For the Simple Eater:
Some kids just love their daily sandwich, so these hard-wearing reusable sandwich bags mean they can enjoy it without the plastic wrap. Like our zip snack pouches, these can be easily stuffed into a pocket whilst out playing, reducing the amount of sandwich containers left out in the playground (you hear me, right?)
So going nude isn’t rude, risque or really that difficult at all! When you have the right tools for your kind of eater, receiving empty pouches, boxes and bottles at the end of the day is the ultimate compliment.
