Cloth Nappy – What is it?
In recent years we have seen an increased focus on the waste we create during our everyday lives and how we might curtail our reliance on landfill as our waste solution. As parents we want to be part of the solution and teach our children how to care for the Earth so that future generations can enjoy the world as we do.
In the space of less than 50 years, our society has moved from exclusively using cloth nappies (the good old cotton terry squares!) to mostly disposable nappies.
While no doubt convenient, disposable nappies are made from plastic and contain a cocktail of chemicals that many parents ordinarily wouldn’t dare to have near their child.
And scientists estimate that it will take a disposable nappy anywhere from 300-500 years to break down in landfill.
And that means that every disposable nappy that has ever been made, still exists.
I’ll give you a moment to get your head around that. All the nappies lying buried in landfill.
Thankfully the tide is starting to turn back towards cloth in the last 10 years! As cloth nappies have evolved to become more user friendly with better fitting designs, modern fabrics and simpler care routines, we have many parents come to us with questions about using cloth nappies and we love to help you all out! Cloth nappies are a wonderfully low-impact way to reduce your eco footprint and take responsibility for the amount of waste you create.
And there are other benefits too: babies who wear cloth nappies are less likely to suffer from nappy rash; they generally toilet train earlier and cloth nappies are SO much cuter than disposables! We know that benefit is way down the list of importance, but it’s still worth mentioning!
Being a cloth nappy family ourselves, we’ve been through all the ins and outs of using cloth nappies and caring for them so they last for years, and we know that they are absolutely not difficult to use, wash or fit to your baby.
The secret is to be prepared!
Once you have your nappies, practise fitting them on your baby (or a teddy bear or doll if your baby is yet to arrive).
Make sure you know the right way to care for your nappies so that they continue to perform well for years to come. If you’re unsure, contact your retailer or manufacturer and they’ll be happy to give you the right advice for your nappies.
Create a routine for storing used nappies, washing and drying them to ensure you always have clean, dry nappies when you need them.
Here at Bulla Baby we have created the cloth nappies we wish we had right from the start and we know you will love them too.
